"Judge Burnet"

In a traditional pose like this it's easy to wind up with a stuffy, stodgy, pompous portrait; but since Judge Burnet was such a caring and genuinely loving person,  the stiffness of the pose never obscured his real personality. The portrait of his wife Nancy and her Maltese was one of my first commissions.

Pat was such a dazzling bundle of energy, I actually felt her vitality coming off the canvas and igniting my own creative juices when I was painting her. I found it a bit ironic that in order to capture the high voltage charge she delivered, I had to paint her very tight. Painting Governor Allen's wife probably meant more to me than any other work I have done, since I admired Susan so much. It was a true labor of love.
